HOW TO GET INVOLVED
There are many ways to support lung health in Illinois:

  1. Advocate to allow local municipalities to address the known health risks of secondhand smoke, and if they choose, to enact protective clean indoor air laws.
    • Local control creates a level playing field - currently the state law allows any unit of local government to adopt a stronger clean indoor air ordinance.
    • Local control does not require municipalities to do anything - it gives them the option to restrict smoking in all indoor public places and workplaces.

  2. You can support smoke-free environments on a daily basis by making a commitment patronize smoke-free restaurants. Make sure to thank them for protecting your lung health.

  3. Put pressure on restaurants and other indoor workplaces that allow smoking. When you find yourself in a restaurant that allows smoking complain.

  4. Write a letter to the Editor. Don't worry if you haven't done this before, we have a few suggestions to help you draft a great letter!

  5. Join the American Lung Association of Illinois-Iowa Advocacy Network.
The Advocacy Network is a great grassroots tool to help us advocate for reducing tobacco use, promoting clean indoor and outdoor air, and helping people with asthma and other lung diseases.

As a member of the Advocacy Network, you will receive Action Alerts via e-mail updating you on issues critical to lung health. For more information, go to www.lungaction.org and click on "Illinois".
